"No diagnosis in A & E"

About: Aberdeen Health and Care Village / GMED Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Emergency Medicine Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / General Surgery

(as a service user),

I was driven to A&E in Aberdeen after being sick.  I couldn't stomach food, could barely move my right leg and had severe pain that came and went down my right side of my body to the point I couldn't walk  without being hunched over,  and I was progressively getting worse than I was 2-days prior.

When I was seen to and after giving all the information and explaining that I was experiencing pain for long periods of time, then it would subside and then it would  repeat for last 2 days.  The staff member then went out  of the room to speak with a doctor. I was then dismissed after taking a pregnancy test and told to come back if it worsened, despite me trying to express my concern.

I went home where I would sleep then wake up in pain so I called 111 and saw a Geomed in Stonehaven who was really concerned but couldn't identify right-off that it wasn't appendicitis therefore booked me into hospital within 30 minutes.

Luckily they did as I did have appendicitis and was operated on the next day. The staff I saw that Monday night and Tuesday were great and I could not fault them - expect an agency nurse forgot to give me blood thinners after my operation,  but nothing came of it.

My complaint is more to raise awareness that a staff member was too quick to dismiss someone who was visibly unwell and if the right tests were taken they should have been submitted from A&E.

Dear Apirl_22,

My name is Osi, Operations Manager for GMED.

I am sorry to read that you were unwell, under considerable pain and diagnosed with appendicitis. However, I am happy that following your triage to GMED by NHS24 (111) that my colleague in Stonehaven was able to conduct the required assessment and make the necessary referral/admission which lead to a confirmed diagnoses.

If its not asking too much, I would like to have more information on your feedback. For example, the date and time of your triage. This will enable me to identify my colleague in Stonehaven and update them on your feedback. If you wish to email me privately, please do so at gram.gemdurgent@nhs.scot.

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback. GMED continue to review all our processes to make sure we continue to be consistent in the delivery of the best patient center care to all our patients.

I wish you a speedy recovery following your operation.

Regards,

Osi
