"Treatment after knee replacement"

About: District Nursing Teams / District Nursing Team - Kilmarnock General practices in Ayrshire & Arran

(as the patient),

Went to see my gp in 2013 as my knees were very painful they told me that I have to wait until I retired so fast forward to Feb 2022 final got on the waiting list.

Finally in October 2023 a date was set, all went well apart from getting bed sores on the back of my left leg, the leg which had the knee replacement.

When the district nurse came to remove clips from the op, they ignored the bed sores and removed some of the clips, leg started to bleed again so redressed the wound.

Next day another nurse appeared and took the dressing off, remarked about bleeding. I said it was from yesterday, they said it couldn’t be. They also ignored the bed sores.

I am now in more pain and discomfort than before the knee replacement. Going to the GP again - fourth visit -  to try and get my pain relief sorted hopefully.

Now I am back to using crutches to move around, on an average I get 2hrs a night sleep, the rest of the time is spent trying to get comfortable, but the main drawback to my situation is that I am a care giver to my wife who has lost her sense of balance, I have to pick her up off the floor at least once a week.

Dear Dissappointted Ayrshire

thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience, which clearly was a very upsetting and painful time for you, having to wait so long for treatment.

I am sorry that your experience with the District Nursing Team has left you feeling disappointed in the care delivered, this is not something we like to hear.

Your account of the situation is not the experience we want our patients to receive, I am sorry you have been left feeling like this.

After you posted this account I have discussed with the District Nursing Team and I will be happy to meet with you and talk this through. Please contact me directly and I will make sure this arranged.

Thank you for your response. It seems that as a patient there is no where to go when getting into difficulty, as a patient it feels if you ask it may seem like you are questioning their ability.

That's the fact, I guess they have a great deal of work and very little time, but patients are also in pain and don’t really know what is what. I did ask about the sores that were on my leg but was told it wouldn't stick because of hairy legs. You should have seen the mess it left in the bed, which I have to clear up as my wife is more disabled than I am at the moment. I am her full-time carer and I do all the household work, now sometimes I have to care for her even when I am in terrible pain.

It’s alright to get a response from someone who seems to care but it doesn’t help me who is at the sharpe end. The main problem is that when you have wait 3-4 weeks every time need to get an appointment to see some one who hasn’t got the time to listen to what you are going through it doesn’t help.
