"My health is being harmed by poor communication"

I was recently admitted to hospital with urosepsis. Fortunately I made a speedy recovery. During my time in hospital I was visited by a diabetic nurse who told me stop all my insulin until my blood sugar passed 15 mmol. I was then to resume insulin slowly and suggested I would be put on a more modern insulin.

It seems the stop message has been received as written in stone by her diabetic nurse centre colleagues. My levels started to reach 16/17 at which point I unilateraly recommended insulin. The diabetic nurse at the GP practice who tried to find out which new insulin I should be on, was told I should not be taking any at all.

I am very angry that after many years of managing insulin on my own I am now being infantilised and my health is being harmed by poor communication between staff. Nowhere has a doctor been involved.

Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate this because we can always learn from you. This is your service and I am sorry you felt this way about your diabetes management. This isn't the standard of care we strive to deliver. As you have identified communication is an essential area of care that has not met your expectations and has left you feeling frustrated.

We can discuss this at the Clinical Governance meeting we have this week. If you would like me to investigate this or discuss it further please do not hesitate to contact me directly through my email address, denise.burns3@nhs.scot or my telephone number is 01592 648001.

Once again I apologize you feel this way and thank you for taking the time to feed this back to us.

Kind regards
