"Confirmation of appointment and good manners"

About: Edinburgh Dental Institute / Orthodontics

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter is undergoing orthodontic treatment & is attending every 6 weeks for her check ups. Every time she has an appointment, someone calls to confirm the appointment. I’m often at work so can’t pick up so they leave a message. Every time they just say they’re calling to confirm her appointment for next week but they never say the date or time of the appointment. It’s happened multiple times & it's been different people. It would be much more useful if they said were calling to confirm so & so’s appointment on day, date & time of the appointment.

The other thing is that the dentist we see always greets us but when the consultant comes, they never acknowledge either myself or my child. They literally sits down beside her & say ‘open your mouth’. It really doesn’t take much to say good morning, how are you today? And may I have a look in your mouth. It’s a small thing but it makes such a  difference to the whole experience, especially for a child who might be a bit nervous.

Dear CP77,

Many thanks for taking the time to send in your Care Opinion story regarding your experience with us.

Please accept our apologies regarding the issue you raised regarding the consultant, and how it made you and your daughter feel at the time. It's not our goal to make patients and / or parents feel like this. Going forward, we will try to do better.

The Lead Consultant has offered to speak to you and your daughter the next time you are here, if that's something you think would be valuable, please ask for Dr Colin Ritchie during your next appointment, if you'd prefer to talk over the phone, please call us and ask for him.

Regarding the telephone call messages, I am afraid due to Data Protection and GDPR, we aren't allowed to leave, times and dates. We do however leave a number you are able to call us back on.

Once again, thank for your for your story, and apologies about your experience.

Kind Regards

Alex Keir, Principal Dental Nurse.
