I had surgery at Gartnavel in July 2024 - referred from Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, it had been a long road to get to this stage unfortunately since my first referral by GP about my hip 8 years ago! I was very hopeful for a positive outcome.
The care from staff in hospital - the anaesthetists and the surgeon - was excellent. I was discharged same day and staff were friendly so I felt at ease.
Unfortunately the surgery was more complex and didn't improve my symptoms due to more extensive wear and problems discovered with hip, pain has increased so will require a hip replacement very soon - the surgeon explained clearly on my follow up appointment.
The only issue was a bit of a disconnect with physio afterwards, a separate letter was sent to book and there were no appointments South of Glasgow - delay would be five weeks to a first appointment post-surgery. I managed to persevere to get an earlier appointment by travelling further away to another area. This would likely have delayed my recovery . If this was arranged in tandem with surgery as part of planned process it would be easier and more efficient, I think physio was essential to get mobile and back to work. The care by physiotherapist in Parkhead was very useful.
The care and professionalism by almost all staff I have experienced at every stage of the journey from referral from GP has been excellent. However the timescales and delays have been very extensive and quite challenging with chronic pain trying to remain healthy and reasonably active with increased limitations over time.
