"Lack of empathy and compassion"

(as a service user),

I told the support worker that I felt stressed, very anxious, suffered from panic attacks and felt low.

The answer I received was-you are not the only one you know, there are other people in the same boat. The tone of voice used was flat, firm and emotionless, there was no form of compassion/emotion ether.

I was really upset, I felt like what they said to me might as well have been -stop whining, moaning, you're not the only one, grow up and shut up!

I spoke to someone I hardly know about the incident and she was really shocked and said they thought the person in question displayed no empathy at all.

I wanted someone to listen to me, to display empathy and compassion, to reassure me, to encourage me, to tell me I was doing well, to acknowledge I had a lot going on in my life and that it must be  very hard, but I could always talk to them they'd be there for me.

If I'd have been a service user and lived by myself and they were the only one I had to talk to and I was very low, I fear it would have been much worse.

This is not what we want for our customers and I am so sorry this was your experience. You raise some very valid points and we are really keen to learn from your experience. You are absolutely right to let us know this has happened to you.

Are you happy to let us know which project you are a customer of so that I can pass this on to the appropriate team for their reflection? Our overarching aim as an organisation is to treat all our customers as individuals and to empathise with the particular challenges they may be facing.

I would like to offer my apologies. I know we can't change your experience, but we can look into it and learn from it.
