Nursing student feedback on their use of Care Opinion stories

“I used Care Opinion for my course paper to look at how good the treatment of anorexia nervosa patients is. I also used it to research how patients feel about their treatment and if there was more that could be done

I used Care Opinion to revise for my Professionalism exam. It gives a good understanding of the best ways to care for patients preserving dignity and respect. It gives examples of bad nursing as well which I think is helpful, and reading these will make me a better nurse.

It gave me a very good insight into nursing today. Some excellent nursing yet some bad nursing too, so it gives student nurses something to aspire to!

I used Care Opinion for study – particularly associated with respect, dignity and person-centred care, for recommended reading and just general interest.

The emails alerting us to new stories are great, usually they are really relevant and it’s great that the link on the email logs us in automatically. The stories are useful because it stimulated us to critique and question the care a person or their relative has received, looking at negative aspects and suggesting improvement, but also positive aspects and learning what matters to people.

It would be useful to have more opportunities to actually discuss the stories in classes or tutorials, but I think the website is a valuable tool for improving future care and the more stories the better!

I think the site is excellent, reading good stories is always lovely and reading bad ones makes you think about your own practice. It is highly commendable.

However, for myself, I see very little (academic) educational value in using the site as I don’t find personal anecdotes particularly useful when studying or writing an assignment. It is just not particularly helpful when studying a subject. I will not be using the site for anything other than interest and gaining personal insight.

I used Care Opinion during the Professionalism course, particularly around lectures concerning care and dignity and when studying patient protection legislation. I also used the resource while revising and preparing for the exam, using quotes and case studies to support my essays.

I think the resource was eye-opening and challenging, helping us as students see things from a patient/service-user’s perspective. Although some of the stories were shocking, I think they were important to study and analyse to shape and improve our practice. It was also encouraging to see the positive stories, giving hope and reaffirming why I chose to study nursing.

It was useful to be emailed updates and stories of interest. It acted as a reminder of the resource and most stories were highly relevant to what we were studying.
